The name Schnauzer is derived from the German word for snout; these dogs are named for their distinctive beards. Schnauzers have been used to guard children and have been called Kinder Watchers. Rembrandt owned and painted a Schnauzer. Schnauzers were used as messenger dogs in World War I.
