Animal ID: 15-141Max (male)

Schnauzer Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Most Cats

Update 10/16/15 Max saw the ophthalmologist on October 15 to evaluate his eyes. Max suffers from a ondition known at KCS (dry eye), and because he went too long without being properly treated, neither of his eyes produce any tears at all. Max had a very large infected ulcer in his left eye when he was rescued by United Yorkie Rescue. With proper treatment, Max's infection has cleared up and hiseyes are on the road to recovery. Max has been prescribed a more aggressive eye treatment that should help stimulate tear production. The hope is that with continued treatment, his eyes will be actively producing tears, and we can reduce his eye ... (Read More)drops and ointment to twice a day. Updated bio 10-4-15 Max is our 6.5-year-old Yorkie (probably Schnorkie) mix. Max is 13 pounds. He is is being fostered in Dunedin, FL. Max was picked up from the animal shelter on September 30th after being in the shelter (and cage) for almost three months. We were told that Max has dry eye and needs eye drops twice a day. It was very obvious when Max's rescuer and UYR angel walked into the shelter Max desperately needed our help. His eyes were completely shut and crusty. He obviously couldn't see. He literally collapsed in the car from the exhaustion of being in that facility and feeling of knowing he was rescued. On Thursday Max's foster mom took Max to the vet. After his eye exam, the vet believes he not only has KCS (dry eye), but he also has the condition where his eyelids (top and bottom) grow inward. His tear production in his right eye is zero, and the left eye wasn't much more. He also has what appears to be an ulcer in his left eye. A new regimen of topical antibiotic eye drops, Refresh Liquigel and Optimmune were started in both eyes. All total, he gets eye treatments 5 times during the day. Max will be returning to the vet October 10th or 11th to re-evaluate his eyes (re-test) to see if we are on the right track with the above care plan. The vet highly suggested Max see an eye specialist, especially one who can evaluate him for surgery. Max also has what appears to be a skin rash on both of his inner thighs, which he is on oral antibiotics for. All in all Max is a good-natured dog, but he does sometimes let it be known if he's not happy with one of the others. His size needs to be taken into consideration for Max's forever home. Because of the need for eye treatments, Max really needs to be adopted by someone who can treat him throughout the day. By mid-day his eyes are completely closed until he gets his liquid tears, and then again later in the evening. Hopefully we can get eye surgery for him and find him a wonderful forever home with a family that can take care of him. Max's care will cost a lot of money, especially if he needs eye surgery. Please consider making a donation to Max's care. He needs our help desperately and United Yorkie Rescue needs your help to do this for Max Initial Bio 9/30/15 Max is a sweet 6.5 year old, 13 lb. Yorkie mix being fostered in Dunedin, FL. Hello everybody, my name is Max, and do I have a story to tell you!! I don't know why my family didn't want me anymore, but they left me at the shelter. Sadly, I was there for three whole months! But today I knew my life was changing for the better when my new foster mommy took me out of my cage and told me, 'Welcome to your new life, little man!' I was so exhausted from all those barking dogs and noisy cats that when I got in the car I went right to sleep. My foster mom is still learning everything about me, but she knows (because I showed her) that I know how to walk on a leash, and I know to go potty outside, I'm good with other dogs, and so far I've left the cat alone. Stay tuned for more on me as I keep showing my foster mom and dad all there is to know about me. Now, a word from my foster mom%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD'%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD%BD|Max is a sweet, good-natured Yorkie mix (possibly a Schnorkie - part Schnauzer part Yorkie). He spent way too much time in a cage before United Yorkie Rescue stepped in and rescued him. He is very happy to be out of his cage and in a home where he lives with his other foster brothers and sisters. He has an eye condition called 'dry eye,' and is required to have his eyes washed out with an eye solution, then he gets eye ointment, then eye drops twice a day. Because of his eye condition, he doesn't seem to see very well, but we're still evaluating him on everything. The cost of eye drops is estimated to be between $10 and $30 a month, but after his evaluation at the vet we will know more about that. We do know he loves to snuggle up on the sofa with his people. He just loves getting the attention he so desperately deserves. We'll have an more info and pictures (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Schnauzer in Florida
Schnauzer Dogs can make good pets in Florida if they match your IifestyIe. The Schnauzer is a thickly bearded, medium sized, Terrier type dog. Schnauzers are proud, vivacious animals. Schnauzers are protective toward their people and want to be the boss. It is important to thoroughly socialize and train a Schnauzer when it is a puppy. Schnauzers do fine with older kids. A Schnauzer needs lots and lots of exercise and a daily walk but can live in an apartment if its exercise needs are met.
